My interest in photography first started while watching my father developing his photos. A mysterious red light transformed our family bathroom into a laboratory where black and white images would magically appear on wet paper. When I got the first camera of my own on my 15th birthday I started dabbing into that magic too, taking and developing pictures of my family and friends.

After moving to Hobart in 1994 my photography helped me to maintain contact with my relatives back in Russia, providing pictures to better illustrate the proverbial thousands words in my letters. I was telling stories about Tasmania through my photos, a camera became an essential piece of sightseeing and bushwalking kit.

While living in Tasmania I have fallen in love with its nature. It's no surprise that landscapes became my favourite genre. I enjoy taking pictures of running water, unusual geological formations and beautiful rocks, I have a special place in my heart for night photography and in particular Aurora Australis photography. Birds, bugs, flowers - they feature in my images too. And portraiture, the genre which started it all, also remains an important part of my work. Over the years I have developed an interest in events photography, I love documenting various public or social occasions either on my own or within a group of like-minded photographers.

Now I live in Perth, Western Australia. Different light, different scenery, different wildlife… My journey through photography goes on!

What’s in a name?

Galina is a Russian name, derived from a Greek word galini, meaning "calm", "peaceful", just like I am 😊

I think it goes well with my surname, which happens to be Greek too. This photo was taken by my husband in 2007 when travelling in Greece.
